The valves still have good compression (especially for a horn of this age). The low range of this horn is very fat as well. It is a thinner bell, giving the horn a better upper range than the 8Ds made today. The bell is not heavy like the normal modern 8D bell. It makes this a great chamber instrument, though it certainly can be played loud enough for a large orchestra. The rose brass bell gives the horn an even warmer, smoother sound than a normal 8D. The original Elkhart bell was damaged, so a genuine Conn rose brass bell was put on this horn.

It is a great horn, and will be a great choice for a professional player, or a student looking for a good upgrade that will last him a long time. I played this horn in a concert, and I was able to blow a powerful soloistic line over the top of a powerful wind band.

It has a very rich tone, and is capable of playing a beautiful, smooth, and clear pianissimo, as well as a full, rich fortissimo. Though all Conn 8Ds are good horns, the Elkhart models are highly sought after and are often very hard to find in good condition.
